Labas iš Lietuvos!

(Hello from Lithuania!)
I arrived safely to Lithuania and am now installed in a nice apartment, about 5 minutes walk from the center of the Old Town in a district called Uzupis… they say it’s the “Montmartre of Vilnius”. There are lots of artists and galleries around. It’s a nice quiet, safe area and my little market is just across the street.
I wasn’t sleeping when I first got here and got a pretty nasty cold which made it worse. But I was able to move in on Sunday and spent Monday resting all day. Turns out they sell Tylenol Cold in the pharmacy here so I got some of that and I’m feeling lots better now.
Being here is like being in Aspen. It just feels right.
It’s amazing how fast the city is growing, the new bars, restaurants, stores, streets, buildings… the city is really coming along. I hear there’s even a big new mall (Akropolis) with a super cinema like we’re used to in the US and they’re playing movies in English with subtitles!
There’s not much snow yet, but it’s on it’s way. I’m learning to love the clouds… it keeps it warmer. But walking everywhere you work up a nice toasty body heat anyway.

Now for the big news… I feel strange announcing it, I can’t hardly believe it myself! But I had a meeting with Cosmopolitan this morning, and they offered me the position of Photo Editor! I’ll be working with Cosmo, and also the Lithuanian fashion mag Ieva and we’ll be launching FHM Lithuania (For Him Mag… that’s like Cosmo for men…) early next year! Frankly I think it’s absolutely absurd, but I’m gonna just go with it! They want a more professional, read western, look to the magazines. I’ll be working with the photographers on photo shoots, working with the fashion editor to coordinate it all, also shooting some of the stories myself, as well as choosing illustrations to go with other smaller stories.
So, very exciting times! I look forward to 2005!

wow, congrats! (although I see the news are quite outdated
. Anyway, I was wondering- do you think it’s hard to find an English speaking job in Lithuania in general? Or did you speak Lithuanian before you landed the cosmo job?

Hi, yea, well I’m obviously just getting this site going… please do check back in the next weeks as it will be growing quickly!
I spoke only very limited Lithuanian when I arrived in 2003, and I still speak mostly English at work, though I would now consider myself (nearly) fluent. It did help though that I am a Lithuanian citizen, so there was no issue with visas or residency permits.
I think that if you decide to simply uproot and move to Vilnius, you’ll have a hard time finding a decent job – unless you’re a trained chef or something, I know several foreign chefs working in our restaurants. You would be better off applying to the European Commission or a business that has an office in Lithuania. Though, if it’s a job that requires working with local clients, they would no doubt prefer if you speak Lithuanian or at least Russian I think.
Good luck!
